Companions & Pets Name Generators
Name generators for animal companions, familiars, mounts, and pets. Covers real animals, fantasy creatures, and exotic companions.
Using companion name generators effectively
Describe the owner, not just the animal
A wolf companion owned by "a grizzled ranger" gets different names than one owned by "a ten-year-old princess." The owner's personality shapes what they would name their companion. Include the owner in the description field for more fitting results.
Pick the right species generator
Dog, cat, wolf, horse, and dragon companion names follow very different conventions. A war dog and a pet cat live in different naming universes. Use the specific species generator rather than the general Bird or Reptile ones when a more specific option exists.
Generate names that work when shouted
Companion names get called across battlefields, whispered in danger, and shouted in warning. Test the generated names by imagining your character yelling them urgently. Names that are too long, too quiet, or too complex fail this real-world usability test.
Memorable companion names in fiction
The best animal companion names become as iconic as the human characters they accompany.
| Name | Source | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Hedwig | Harry Potter | An obscure medieval saint's name for an owl companion. It sounds both wise and slightly old-fashioned, which is exactly right for a snowy owl delivering wizard mail. |
| Ghost | A Song of Ice and Fire | Jon Snow's direwolf is the albino runt of the litter, named for his silent movement and white fur. The name also foreshadows Jon's own relationship with death. |
| Shadowfax | The Lord of the Rings | Old English for "shadow-mane." Tolkien gave the lord of all horses a name in the language of Rohan's horse-lords, grounding the name in the world's internal linguistics. |
| Appa | Avatar: The Last Airbender | A short, warm, easy-to-shout name for a ten-ton flying bison. The name sounds like a child's word for a beloved animal, which is exactly what it is. |
