Create a character profileThe golem tradition originates in Jewish Kabbalistic mysticism, where the Golem of Prague was animated by inscribing the Hebrew word emet (truth) on its forehead. Golem names are often given by their creators and may reference the construct's material or animating word of power.
About golem names
The Golem of Prague, created by Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel in the 16th century, is the most famous golem in folklore. It was animated by placing a shem (a slip of paper with God's name) in its mouth. The golem itself was called "Yosef" in some accounts, a deliberately ordinary name for an extraordinary being.
Golems in fantasy have expanded far beyond the Jewish tradition to include stone golems, iron golems, flesh golems, and more. Each material type suggests different naming approaches: clay golems suit Hebrew-rooted names, while a dwarven-crafted stone golem might carry a runic designation.
Unlike most creatures, golems do not name themselves. The name is always given by the creator, making golem naming an act of characterization for the creator rather than the construct. What a wizard chooses to call their golem reveals their relationship to it.
Naming tips
Consider whether the golem has a name at all
Many golems in fiction are unnamed, referred to only as "the golem" or by their material ("the clay one"). Giving a golem a proper name is a significant narrative choice that implies the creator sees it as more than a tool.
Hebrew roots for traditional golems
If drawing from the original Kabbalistic tradition, Hebrew words for truth (emet), servant (eved), or protector (shomer) provide appropriate name roots. The animating word itself can serve as the golem's name.
Use material references for constructed golems
A golem made of iron might be named for the sound it makes when moving. A clay golem might carry the name of the riverbank it was shaped from. The material is the golem's identity.
